Modalities

What Are Modalities?

Modalities are formally known as electrophysical agents (EPAs). They include the following:

  • Heat Packs
  • Ice Packs
  • Interferential Current (IFC)
  • Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS)
  • Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES)
  • Ultrasound (US)
  • Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

Your physiotherapist is trained in the safe, effective, and evidence informed application of these electrophysical therapeutic agents as an adjunct treatment to physiotherapy.

What is an adjunct treatment?

Any form of therapy that is considered to help or assist a patient’s primary treatment. We do not believe in the exclusive use of modalities, especially in the absence of other skilled, manual, and therapeutic interventions, as that would not benefit you as the patient nor would it be considered true physical therapy. That is why at our clinic, your treatment will always include a combination of manual therapy, acupuncture or modalities, and a personalized exercise program. Trust us, you are in good hands.

What are some common reasons why physiotherapists use modalities?

  • Modulate pain
  • Modulate the healing process
  • Modulate tissue remodelling
  • Facilitate muscle control/strengthening

Trust us, you are in good hands.
